There are some concerns due to the limited clamping area it affords, and as a stock part, it’s probably not as nicely made as the Elaire collet (I ordered a 1/4" precision collet from Elaire: http://www.elairecorp.com/makitaroutercollets.html and have been considering the 8mm)
One interesting consideration is that it’s useful to expand the range of devices which one can clamp, so it makes a dial indicator with a 3/8" shaft directly usable.
