3d carving with pro

I don’t know why I can’t figure this out. I am trying to make a gradual depression and then add an stl file into it. For some reason I cant figure out how to make the image not have to be sunken down into the project by 15-20% to make it fit.

My stock is .75 oak and is the sides of a chest that I made.

Attached is a file where I created my base stock and then tried to build off of that. I would appreciate any help trying to figure this out. I have watched video after video and can’t figure it out.
First dumb attempt.c2d (2.3 MB)

Thanks in advance folks

It’s difficult to tell exactly what you are trying to achieve. It looks like the center of the stars is the highest point on the model (STL). But the edges of the stars are so close to the edge that there won’t be a whole lot of relief. And the center sinks down because it’s being added to the dish shape.

If you try making the last component Merge Type: max, with a 0.625 base height. Is this closer to what you want?

I think my ultimate goal is to have to Anchor highest point at the top of the stock and the rest of it following the curvature of the depression. Really I don’t know the look I want I am just tying to figure this stuff out. I like the look of the depression sort of “framing” the object. Is there a way to have the object itself be as flush as possible with the top of the stock and still create that same bowl look underneath it?

Thanks brother that is super helpful. Last question… Now that I have tried all these things I obviously didn’t write anything down, but when I go in to edit it only gives me about half of the information. Is there a way to see all the settings so I can actually write things down and recreate this?

Sadly, no. You could include the shape parameters in the name. Round_45_Limit_0.375, etc…

In the past I’ve taken a screen shot after clicking the Show 3D button. That gives you the settings and a preview to compare to other settings you may want to try.

Thanks for all the help. I think it turned out super cool. I’m currently trying to replicate it with other stl files with… not great results
