3d data disappearing when re-opening files

I’m working on a project that’s got a lot of 3d knotwork that I’m creating in Illustrator, exporting as a DXF, importing into CC, then adding 3d dimension in the “Modeling” tab of CC. I’m using the latest beta build of CC (854).

I’ve started running into a frustrating bug that I haven’t been able to pin down to what’s actually causing the problem. I’m saving files with the 3d modeling in them, closing them, then when I reopen, the 3d modeling is gone. There’s a post from last Sept that describes the exact problem but their issue appeared to be from opening a file from an older version of CC with a newer version. These files have been created with the same version that is reopening them, on the same machine.

What might be part of it is the relative complexity of the file, there are a lot of vectors being modeled and i have it on the highest quality level so it’s taking a while to calculate everything when I make changes. Also, I have toolpaths set up that are pretty detailed so it can freeze the program a bit when it’s trying to highlight if I mouse over one of them.

I’ve put a link below to one of the files that is having the problem. It’s 23mb but when I open it in CC, I don’t see the modeling data, even though it’s clearly there. I re-saved a different file that had this happen and the file size went from around 23mb to 600kb. If I figure anything else about what might be causing this, I’ll add to this, but I’m stumped.

One thing that might be a part, I’ve been making quite a bit of use of the “open another window” feature and having sometimes up to 5 or 6 files open at a time. I don’t know if that could be a factor, but I wanted to mention it.

Do you have a backup copy of the file which still has the 3D model?

Is there any consistency to what is done in the file before saving and the 3D model no longer being present?

I’ve tried saving and closing files then opening them to see if i can get this to happen, but I haven’t been able to get it to happen when i “want” it to. i’m going to keep trying to see if i can isolate the issue.

I got it to happen!

I am linking 2 files “file-save-test-1” and “file-save-test-1 2”. I’ve been messing around trying to get it to fail and so I had created this file earlier from the same file that I linked initially. the one with the 2 at the end, i never edited to try to preserve things.

the unaltered file is 500kb and the other one is 27mb. I was looking at the file up close and saw that the gradient was really pixellated on the 3d model. So I opened the model for the two sets of knotwork vectors, made a superficial change that forced a re-render, and after it took a long time to save, the gradients were perfect, and when I re-opened the file, they were gone.

As I was in the process of doing this, it dawned on me that this might be the key since i’d had this happen a few times. So I screenshotted after i’d updated one set of vectors but before i’d updated the other. So you can see in this screenshot how one set is pixelated and the other is smooth.

Ok, i was able to get a sequence that caused it to happen:

  • create a blank file, make sure it’s set to 50x resolution and 36x8in
  • add something and save it then close out of CC so when you re-open, it’s already set to those settings
  • open CC so it’s a blank file
  • import this dxf headboard border board6.dxf (249.6 KB)
  • go to the modeling tab
  • select this vector, go to “model shape”, and set it to flat, height 0.5", merge type “equal”, base height - 0.5

  • click done

  • select this vector and apply these settings: shape - round, angle - 90, merge type - equal, base height - 0.5

  • re-open the first shape and set the base height to 0

  • save the file

  • close CC

  • reopen CC

  • for me, the height data was gone

When I import that DXF there is a warning about an unsupported HATCH element

and the geometry is offset from the Stock:

I had this same issue yesterday with the same build. I was making a set of four different 3d models (four different files) for a future project using .stl files. Everything went well, simulation and all, saved the file and moved on to the next. However, when I went back and reopened the files, the model was gone from the tab but the toolpaths remained. If I tried to run the simulation, it would just carve through the material and leave a blank screen. 3 of the 4 files I worked on had the same issue. I just figured I screwed up somewhere and redid the files from scratch. They worked the second time around.

If you do the same but without grouping, i’m curious if it still works. When it imports, it’s all selected already so I just drag it onto the material and go from there.

I’ve had that hatch warning for every DXF i import from illustrator so I think it’s just some thing that is being added in that. I’ve had many other files import and work just fine for me so I don’t think that’s an issue.

Also, I don’t think it’s an issue either, but I change the units from CM to IN when I import it.

I didn’t preview it when i did this either, though I had on other files that had this issue.

It looks like you’re trying it on a PC, do you have a way to try on a mac? I’m just wondering if it might be a platform-specific nuance or not.

Either way, if you can try going through exactly the steps without any other previewing, or even changing tabs afterwards, i’m curious if that would affect things. I tried to list exactly what i did and if the “fix” for now was as simple as “make sure you’re in the design tab” before you close the program" or something, that would be great to know.

if it would help you i can also record a screen capture as I go through, which would inevitably mean that it wouldn’t have the problem that time, lol. but i can try to show exactly what I’m doing to see if it’s repeatable.

I don’t believe that the differences which transpired due to lack of information are relevant or probative.

That said, if you can capture a pair of files:

  • has 3D model
  • lacks 3D model

and a repeatable set of steps for causing the 3D model to vanish, I am confident we can sort this out in short order.

Until that time, my recommendation would be to export the 3D model as a PNG for reference.

I just saved this file and tried to import it into another project but it is missing the 3D model even though the details show 117mb.

I do not have a second copy of the file. The other two files I created during the same session act the same.

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to replicate this problem consistently aside from just knowing that most of the stuff i’m working on is going to open without the 3d data and I can’t figure anything out. I even created a new file and re-imported one of the DXF files that i’d been using and re-applied all the same 3d settings and it has been opening just fine.

I feel like the project i’m working on is cursed or something because i keep working on these files, save everything and if i close out and come back to it, all my work is gone. i’ve had other files that are newer that haven’t had the problem.

It does make me wonder if the solution from the previous time this was reported actually does have some connection. I only got my Shapeoko in April and I’ve now been through 3 or 4 versions of CC. So I have to wonder if one of those versions did something slightly different that is causing the files saved in that version not to retain the 3d data. though, i did create a new file the other day when i was reporting this, import a DXF, apply 3d modelling, save, and it reopened without the 3d data. So I dunno.
