Great to hear! Will order as soon as it hits.
As an owner of a S4Pro, what would my best upgrade be?
We’d recommend the 65mm VFD. It’s a solid spindle and a lot quieter than the Compact Router.
I have had the C3D 65mm spindle on two S4Pro machines. It is what I recommend. It is lighter weight, which is good for the belt driven machines. You don’t have to buy a different spindle mount (but I do HIGHLY recommend getting the Deep Sweepy). It perfectly matches the motion system of the S4Pro in my opinion. The 80mm weights a TON more and is vastly overpowered compared to the motion system, so it poses no advantage on the S4Pro.
That’s my experience at least.
Quick question for @robgrz / @Luke
Is the VFD to spindle cable longer on this VFD to allow us a bit more flexibility on where to mount the VFD enclosure compared to the 65mm spindle kit?
I just placed my order! Can’t wait for it to arrive, and look for my unboxing and assembly/comparison video on my YouTube channel as soon as it arrives!
Hi Winston. Your reply states “Unless you bought a 65mm VFD spindle with the Shapeoko, nothing you purchased already will a duplicate of anything in the 80mm kit.” I bought the 65mm VFD spindle with my Shapeoko 5 Pro so what is duplicated with the new 80mm kit? If parts are duplicated, do you have an 80mm kit version for those of us who bought the 65mm VFD? Cost?
Thanks
There are no common parts on the 65/80mm kit.
The sentiment was more for the people who are thinking “Aw shucks, I bought a 65mm VFD last week and now I have 65mm paperweight if I upgrade” There’s nothing in common between the two kits that could be carried over unless you were to dig through the boxes and transfer over a couple cables.
Ok Winston. Thanks for the clarification. I’m one of those people who just bought my 5 Pro with a 65mm Spindle kit and wished I’d waited 90 days.
I got my new SO5 with the new 80mm 2.2k VFD set up and running this weekend. I think I’m in love!!
Going from the SO4 with compact router to the 5 with WC 80mm spindle is such a huge difference. The noise level, the performance, the accuracy - just wow!!
Unfortunately I’m leaving today for 2 weeks and won’t get the opportunity to really put it through its paces until I get back.
While I like the idea of the 80mm spindle the concerns I have are the cable lengths for use with the Shapeoko 5 Pro 4 x 4 long enough to bring the unit to the front of the machine.
Currently I have the Carbide 3D router with 12ft cable and the cable just come to the end of the cat track.
I hope this has been address with this unit.
One step ahead of you, the spindle cable is 6 meters long. Just shy of 20 feet.
ATC, ATC, ATC, ATC the customer base roars!
It works Great… Thank You
If I said an ATC would be around $4k - would you still be interested?
Luke, short answer, yes I would.
Long answer, I understand ATC is not for everyone, especially a hobbyist. I consider ATC for the advanced hobbyist/production user that is doing multi-bit projects.
5-10 minutes (on average) for a bit change, with a possible of an opps moment tossed in increasing that time/waste the project?
I consider my CNCs as a valuable assistant that frees me to do other things while keeping an eye on the CNCs.
I currently have (1) Next Wave, (2) 3XXL, (1) DWC, and just place the order for a commercial DWC that has ATC, vacuum table, 6hp WC spindle, oiler. Some days only one is running. Other days they are all running projects. Five CNCs running 8 eight hours a day = 40hr/day.
If I can eliminate an average of (1) hr of manual bit change per CNC per day, it’s a no brainer for me.
I would buy 3 for my HDM’s.
Man, I really need to step up my marketing game.
If this new spindle is as good as it is lead to be, then I would like to get a purchase of one for sure. Then I would have my 65mm for sell to anybody wanting to upgrade their router to a spindle. I would rather have had the water cooled bigger spindle in the first place. We see how this plays out for me here soon. I cant believe I am just finding out about this new offered spindle.
