Hello I’ve been running my CNC machine for a few weeks now fairly hard probably around six hours per day. I noticed a rattling sound starting to come from my router that came with the CNC machine. Does anyone know what that means I should look for?
I suppose you mean the C3D router. With the router off take hold of the spindle and shake it. It should not move. If it has wiggle then the bearings are bad and that is possible what you are hearing. It is not uncommon for the C3D router to have the bearings inside the router go bad.
If it is not the bearings then not sure. You could have something that got sucked in to the router and is making your noise but I would discount that.

I think that’s it cus the nut where I take the bit out is really hot
If it is in warranty then support will replace it. If it is out of warranty go buy a new Makita. Your precision collets and other accessories will work on t he Makita. The C3D router is a clone of the Makita. You can order a Makita rebuild kit but at the price point it is not worth it to me to disassemble the router and assemble with the same parts that just failed. No thanks for me. The Dewalt 611 is a great router but it is 69MM where the C3d/Makita is 66MM so on the newer machines if you have a 66MM router mount then you need to stick with Makita/C3d and/or a 110V 66MM spindle and VFD. You could splurge and upgrade to the C3D spindle???
I just change my C3D Router for the C3D Spindle. My router was making a strange sound. I gave it for free to a friend that likes to repair everything. He open it and found 2 problems. The bearing at the bottom was dying and the Fan was 3mm far from the right place and was touching something while running. It cost him 25$ because he replaced both bearing with new quality ones and now the router is running like a new one.

What do you expect a router style to last as far as hrs?
Also the issue seems to happen if I set the router to 5 or more. Is that just normal at that setting?
C3D makes a lot of great products. However the C3D router is not one of t hem. The C3D router is a clone of the Makita. So a clone is never as good as the original. The Makita itself is pretty good but is itself a budget router so you got a cheap router that is made cheaper.
I have regular routers that are 40 years old and have been run and run and run and have no bad bearings. I have a Dewalt 611 in my SO3 that the original router that is 7 years old and has had the brushes changed once. So to answer your question about how long a router should last that answer is a long long time. Even in a cnc router with a lot of continuous run time it should last. A trim router may only run 5 minutes at a time in the real world. Where in the CNC world it may run for 5 hours straight.
So for all the great things C3D makes the router is not one of them. I have seen repeatedly people here on the forum have bad bearings on their router. I once bought a used SO3 XL and the C3D router had bad bearings. The previous owner sold the machine because he could not get any precision but never figured out that the router was the problem. It turned out to be a good deal for me because I figured it out in about 5 minutes and got a Makita and the problem of precision was solved.
I am sure there are plenty of the C3D routers out there that have never given any trouble but no thanks for me.
I’m going to need to buy a spindle at some point it seems cus I plan to work my cnc fairly hard. Thanks again for the info
BTW, You should never run them faster than 3 (18000) RPM. If you go faster, you will burn them fast.
Don’t tell that to my Makita router. It’s been a work horse after it replaced the Carbide router that checked out after two or three weeks of use.
