Ability to measure z axis in 3d view and simulation

I like the new xy grid in 3d view. I assume the grid matches what we set it at. I would like to see it on the z axis also so you can measure depth or position without having to make additional geometry of various heights to check. Or maybe a ruler measure function.

Note that the Status Bar in the 2D view does provide the depth of the 3D model at the cursor position:

(note the Grid and depth of 1.833mm specified in the Status Bar)

If the cursor is moved to a different grid position:

then the Z-axis height value changes to 11.999mm.
