Advanced Carve Help

I created what I think is a very simple project to test VCarve functionality. It is basically carving an oval pocket into maple and using walnut to inlay. After running the jobs, the plug has a lot of play and I’m not sure why. I’ll attach the two files I’m using if that will help. I took some measurements with my digital caliper and will list those. All measurements are inches.

Pocket
depth = 0.25
bottom of pocket = 5.385 x 3.201
top of pocket = 5.474 x 3.298

Plug
depth - 0.27
bottom of plug (where it would meet with the pocket) = 5.308 x 3.050
top of plug (where I would run surfacing after glue up) = 5.401 x 3.203

Can anyone help me understand what I’m missing here and why the two components did not mate up based on the files I’ve run?

Thanks in advance.

Your files did not load, or the links are corrupted. I’m still stuck in old Unix mode & try to avoid spaces in filenames.?

If you look at the differences between the top & bottom of each measurement, they seem to vary quite a bit. From those numbers your pocket varies from 19.6° to 21.2°, and the plug varies from 19.0° to 29.5°. The angles should be the same everywhere, and should match the angle on your tool. Your “top of plug” dimension should be larger than the “top of pocket” dimension. Same with the bottom dimension.

What tool are you using? I’m guessing a half angle of 20° (40° Vee Bit)??

Thank you for that information. I guess I put in a hyperlink by mistake. Let’s see if attaching the files works better. The tools I used for the Advanced VCarve were the Shapeoko 201 (1/4 inch end mill) for pocketing and a 30 degree v bit for the rest.

Your starting depth on the pocket should be 0.0
Everything else looks kosher.

Thanks again for checking that out. I’ll modify the pocket tool path and attempt to run it again. As always, the folks in this community are super helpful. I really appreciate that!

I worked for Sun/Oracle and even now I use underscore on file names instead of spaces. Old habits die hard.
