I made my first flag integrating one of the ship’s crest that I used to be on. I used advanced Vcarve and it’s bypassing the pocket cut before going to the vee bit. Any suggestions?
Upload the file and a photo showing the current state of the cut?
Usually when you have a flat end mill and a vee bit in advanced vcarve and the flat end mill is not called for it is because the bit is bigger than the space for it. In that case the vee bit will do the clearing and never call for the end mill. Maybe you need a smaller end mill to clear the pocket area. CC is pretty smart when making the tool paths and knows how big the pocket is compared to the bit you picked.
Here’s the file, unfortunately I don’t have a picture of the cut since I sanded it down.
PC10.c2d (1.2 MB)
Your PC10 tool path will need a 1/16 or 1/32" bit to cut more of the flat areas. That small of an endmill will increase the carving time but you will get a better outcome.
Is your plan to paint or epoxy? If painting the .1" depth will work but for epoxy I would go a bit deeper to give you some buffer after surfacing to remove the epoxy. Always overfill epoxy because it shrinks as drying. Plus with a .1" depth if the epoxy is not completely opaque then the wood grain might show through.
I looked up the USS Firebolt and thought others might like to see what it is.
Thanks, looks like I’ll be adding some bits to my collection. And for a little more history on the USS FIREBOLT, on April 24, 2004 three crewmembers died when we were conducting exclusion ops off the coast of Iraq. I attached a picture of the final outcome after doing some sanding and more staining, I’m happy with it. Thanks for all of your advice.
