Kinda late response here, but I bought a 4XL Standard router and have had my fair share of mishaps. ChatGPT was a lifesaver!
A couple of things made working with it a lot easier for me. First, I threw out the wrenches that came with the machine and bought a decent set from Home Depot. That alone made a huge difference—helped a ton with slippage during cutting. I went from almost chewing up my spoilboard every day to it basically never happening.
I use mostly 1/4" bits and also cut a lot of thin material (3 mm and 6 mm). The biggest issue there was clamping—it caused the sheet to bulge up in the middle, which wrecked the Z control. I fixed that by installing M6 threaded inserts in my spoilboard and using the bolts that came with the machine to screw down the middle of the sheet. Total game changer. Now I can cut onion-skin tabs all day and use a 1/16" roundover to route them out super easily.
Overall, I think the machine is great, but it does have flaws. For the price, though, it’s a good deal. The software side could definitely use some help—Carbide Motion on Windows was a nightmare for me. I had to switch to my Mac to get it working smoothly. Apart from that, it’s been a decent machine.
