Has anyone created an Old School arcade cabinet? I am looking for pro/cons any and all example templates, thoughts, and Do’s and Do Not’s…
Might be tough to play Pac-Man on that one.
I’m afraid we have a bit of a linguistic barrier here.
“Arcade Cabinet” specifically refers to video games which are mounted in cabinets — usually for commercial settings which charge per play, think Pac-Man.
That cabinet which you show would usually be termed a soundproofing enclosure in typical parlance.
Though, an enclosure which looks like an arcade cabinet with a joystick to position the gantry would be…
…the world’s most permanent “claw game”? ![]()
As for building an actual arcade cabinet, I’ve got my MAME-and-such system broken out into a “brain” with two outrigger “controller” modules, which makes it more couch-friendly, but it would be cool to make an arcade cabinet that the (new versions of the) various modules dock with. In docked mode, you have a standard upright two-player cabinet, and undocked, you have two controllers and a brain box that you hook up to the big TV in the living room.
Okay, now I have another entry in my project list, but currently it’s a bit far down. (The next in-depth design-build project is likely going to have to be some root beer bottle display shelves, as I’ve used up all the cabinet-top space and even temporarily evicted my open spice shelves, and we still have a couple dozen more unique root beers waiting in the fridge.)
I’ve got this one on my list as well!
I had a student make this (after I told him there was no room):
