Art Glass Etching

Hello. Trying to us McEtcher to etch ART glass, specifically BULLSEYE TEKTA. Not having any luck, do not get any etch. Have plenty of depth but have been told Tekta is much harder than “normal” window pane glass.
Anyone have experience with etching Tekta?

Thanks, Pete

Do you have a link to the hardness? I couldn’t find any with a quick search.

The etcher is diamond tipped so I’d assume it can scratch it if the tool is in good condition. Maybe try etching another known working material to see how it goes?

If the etcher is just skating across the glass, I’d assume something is wrong. With the glass being fusible, it’s probably not as hard as something like sapphire glass. So it should be well within scratch range of most etching tools.

As an aside, have you tried glass etching cream? “Armour etch” is affordable and surprisingly easy to get ahold of. It tends to produce more of a frosted finish which may not be what you’re looking for but it’s worth checking out. I’ve had good experience with it in mugs and mirrors using vinyl cut stencils :man_shrugging:

Oh and see this thread on etcher longevity, it’s got some good general info: MC Etcher longevity - #9 by MadHatter

I have etched glass and mirrors using the McEtcher.

Glass is can vary in thickness between plates. Find a lubricant that cleans off (vegetable oil, soap, etc … )

You have to lean on the glass so it starts to “crunch”. It sounds a bit scary when running.
I played with the spring in order to get a good cut.

I listen to the cut and adjust the feed rate to something that works.

The lubricant will make the glass bits clump up. Be careful cleaning debris.
