Bit/Cutter Longevity

How long should cutters/bits last with hardwood using carbide 3d feeds & speeds?

There is no definite answer. You can feel on the bit to see if it still feels sharp. Carbide lasts a long time but you can use a diamond fine card to touch up the flat side of a carbide bit. Keeping the bit clean goes a long way towards longevity. I use a CMT bit and blade cleaner and clean bits on a regular basis.

You should be able to cuts thousands of feet with a carbide cutter before resharpening or replacement. That is also depending on your depth of cut and IPM settings. The hotter a bit gets the shorter its life.

Start with cleaning a bit and then touch up with 5-10 strokes in the same direction with a diamond credit card type of stone. The carbide bits dont last forever but they last a long time.

Thanks guy, that’s good info👍

How long they will last exactly is hard to say.

If your using cutters purchased from c3d and you run the default feed and speeds in the tool library, they should last quite a long time.

I have purchased cutters from c3d and I think they are good quality.

I agree with Guy, to watch that the cutter doesn’t get hot, that can shorten the life of a cutter.

Thanks, John, I appreciate your response
