Bit extension on Nomad

New to me a Nomad 883. But many years of experience owning production metal working CNC’s.

I notice in a number of videos long extension of the bits out from the collet. This is not good. The bit should only extend out as far as needed for the job.

Yesterday using a new 1/4" ball nose carbide bit it was apparent it sticks way out due to the spindle not being hollow up inside. So I shortened the bit.

Having the long extension magnifies any runout in the collet and spindle. Long stick out can cause chatter too.

Not sure what you can do about the machine part. I have a Nomad Pro and sometimes shorten bits for the same reason you point out. Easy to do with a Dremel and a diamond cut-off wheel. I spring clamp the bit to a scrap of wood with a wetted, folded up paper towel beneath to prevent heating.
