BitZero Probes?

The BitZero comes with two probes. A 1/4 and a 1/8 inch.
Why the need to use these versus the actual bit you choose to use?
Is there a reason I am not aware of?

The probes are considered more accurate since the profile of the bits (endmills for one forum user ;)) themselves are not 100% circular. The maths used to figure out how far the thing-in-the-spindle travelled before contacting the surface of the bitzero is more accurate with an accurate circle.

(edit: all that said, if you are doing Z only it probably doesn’t matter. And if your stock is large and 0.2mm of error is okay, it also probably doesn’t matter.)
