I made the first one and had to make minor changes for the second one. Then made other minor changes for the 3rd. I think I have all the bugs worked out for future ones. I ordered the black openers from Amazon. Not sure if I got 50 or 100. They were dirt cheap and made of stainless steel. The screws that came with them are maybe too small/short to keep the opener from being ripped out. I will get some longer screws. I think they are #4 but will measure.
The good thing about these bottle openers is they are just made from scrap from around the shop.
Next I am going to make some cocktail smokers. I bought the screens tins of chips of different species. Got the torches ordered today. Not sure about price yet. I will buy some apple juice to demonstrate and not waste good whiskey for freeloaders.
The upper pockets for the opener were done with #251 (1/4" down) #102 (1/8" down). The hole was done with a #102. The logo was a #112 and a 20 degree vee bit. Then the cutout was done with #251.
I ordered the minimum amount of smoker materials. There is a cigar store on main street I will take to sell to them. They have a private lounge for members.
I tried my hand at this last year and could never seem to get the pocket
below the metal bottle opener ring correct…what depth have you found to work?
I too was trying on scrap wood to get my model right…but moved on to another
project before perfecting… :<(
The center hole is 1.0" diameter cut .375" deep. The recess for the bottle opener was 1.58" and the depth was 0.070". Originally I had the logo at .15" but reduced it to .1"
The design for the handle was done in CC by drawing circles and a box that was narrower at the short end. Did a boolean to join the box and the circles.
The design is simple and feels good in the hand. When I sanded it I hit the outside corners. I think for future ones I will do an 1/8-1/4" roundover.
I went by the cigar store in Nacogdoches and showed the owner one of the bottle openers. I will make a couple with their name on it and let them decide if they want more. I also talked to them about the cocktail smokers. They were interested. I need to draw up the smoker and a top for it to extinguish the flame after creating the smoke. So it was a busy day along with an eye doctor appointment.
Also went by Atwoods and bought 2 more horse shoes and some horse shoe nails. I have cut out two ovals already and painted the first 2 horse shoes gloss black. I drilled a hole top and bottom to let the customer hang the horse shoe in either orientation. The myth is the horse shoe opening down brings good luck to all that enter the doorway. The horse shoe opening up stores luck. I just cut the oval out on the SO3 to mount the horse shoes. Got the 2 new horse shoes painted on the back side earlier and will try to get the front side painted before sundown.
There is no sanding or finish on the ovals. Will use Watco clear Danish oil on the ovals. One is cherry and the other is sycamore. Both pieces were just random stock laying around the shop. I found some more cherry and cut them to get them ready to cut.
You may need to adjust the ledge for the bottle opener for your openers. You need the ledge to be wide enough to get good screw location. That is why I made the center hole 1.0" and the outer pocket 1.58" giving me about a 1/4" to put the screws in.
