Building S5Pro tomorrow - forward carriage position?

Fedex delivered my S5Pro this week - no issues that I can see so far. While the outer box took some hits the inner boxes all look good, so great job with the packaging C3D!

Anyway, I know that I want to be able to machine vertical stock off the front of the machine so was thinking of building it with the carriage in the forward position from the start, instead of installing it as per the PDF & video and then moving it forward.

Any reason not to do this? Have you done this and had any issues?

I would probably install it with the carriage in the rear first so you can surface the entire wasteboard. Then change it to the front position.

Thanks - as it happens I did build in on the rear position for this very reason :slight_smile:

I’ll look at moving it forward at a future date. For now I’ll keep using the S3XL to cut edges.

Does your machine make any of the noise noted in the thread posted on here a few weeks ago? the post has a file you can run to test your machine. I am wondering if his is an isolated event or if i need to return my machine and go a different route.

Well, yes and no. It makes noises, but they aren’t the same noises necessarily! This is NOT a silent machine and if you need silent you need to go a different route.

Here’s what I would say:

  1. The machine IS noisier than my S3XL, though the VFD is so much quieter than the Makita router and I love not having to turn the router on and off or change speeds manually! My Makita had a tendency to change speeds on it’s own so I always had to tape the speed dial down!

  2. The noises I am getting are mainly from the rear right of the machine, so there could be some resonant frequencies based on the table I built it on. I did add some rubber matting, but honestly it’s so stiff any vibrations are likely to go through it.

  3. The stepper motors are bolted directly to the frame, so stepper noise will be amplified by the frame, and there is no getting around that. I would love Carbide 3D to come out with some official dampers for the steppers that almost silenced it! However, those resonant frequencies are when travelling at certain speeds, so other than the fixed homing cycle or pre-set rapid jog speeds, you could likely program around them.

  4. When I worked on a robotics system about 20 years ago we had the same issues with resonant frequencies that we struggled to get rid of due to the same direct coupling between the steppers and the metal frame. On the old S3XL (and I suspect the 4x series as well), the steppers had damping through the belts. The internet said no belts, so keep this in mind and be careful what you ask for!

  5. The problem with YouTube videos, especially those made on mobile phones with auto record levels, there isn’t a good audio level to compare to - it just all sounds loud!

  6. In normal milling operating I don’t hear much sound from the S5Pro at all, it’s mostly drowned out by the bit milling the wood and/or dust collector, which are orders of magnitude louder than the machine itself.

Here are some images. The first one is taken while flattening the spoil board (sorry, the VFD is out of sight). Both the S5Pro and the VFD was so quiet that the only thing I could hear (while wearing my normal ear protectors) was the bit chomping at the MDF and dust collector.

The second one is the arm I made to hold the dust collection hose. When milling this, the ONLY thing I could hear is the bit cutting the plywood.

The third one just shows the arm in position working perfectly :slight_smile:

Is your cut quality pretty good on the walls of a cut piece?

I’ve no complaints about the cut quality at this point. It’s better than my S3XL for sure.
