A customer asked me to make a house sign with a butterfly design. This is what i came up with. Made with 3/4 PVC Board. Pretty happy with the way it turned out.
Do you do anything to prep/treat the cut surface of the PVC before painting? The paint doesn’t look as nice on that more textured surface on the things I have done. Maybe a coat of primer would help?
I cover the whole piece with clear shelf liner before I cut it. After cutting I spray paint the whole thing in flat black. Then i remove the remaining shelf liner and use a 4 inch foam roller to paint the letters and the boarder. Then i spray the whole piece with spray clear coat to seal the paint. I guess you could clear coat the piece after cutting and before you remove the shelf liner and spray the flat black for the background. But since I use flat black (or Green) for the background I’ve never had to do that and am happy with the results. Using the shelf liner just makes it easier to paint the letters and border since i’m not painting over black. If the design has very small detail pieces I skip using the shelf liner because its a pain to peel all the tiny pieces of shelf liner left. In that case i just use a rag with some mineral spirits to remove some of the black overspray from the letters and border. That was probably TMI (Too Much Information)
TMI? NOT A ALL!!! Every word is useful. Learned some new tricks. TY! Great sign btw…
Could you please tell us (me) the brand of the shelf liner?
I believe this is what i used
Thanks! All details count.
