Yesterday I was working on a job with MDF that covered the whole work area. I’m making new spoil board slats that will have threaded inserts and holes for bench dogs. I set the zero at the max of X and Y in the lower left corner and started the job. As it was underway I realized the dog holes were a tad tight so I stopped the run to resize the holes. I had to leave the job overnight because I ran out of time and when I went back this morning I couldn’t set the same zero. The spindle stopped about 1/2” short on the Y axis from where it was yesterday. There is no way the piece moved over night; it’s fastened with double sided tape. Any ideas?
In the photos the zero mark that I used to start the job is the pencil mark about an inch in from the lower left corner, not the black felt marker at the corner. In the side shot, my zero of yesterday is the red felt marker line, where you see the spindle too far forward (earlier today when I tried to rerun the dog holes toolpath). Thanks for any help, and advice for a newbie.
When you say “it stopped short” on the Y axis from the day before was that a “rapids move” to that location or you manual jogging over to set they X/Y zero?
Your X/Y zero should have maintained from the day before and you should not have needed to reset it.
I did a quick jog to the SW corner and then manually jogged the spindle. I initially figured the zero should have been remembered from the day before so I started the run without re-zeroing, but noticed when it started enlarging the previously cut dog holes that it was about an inch “north” of the hole that it should have landed on. That’s when I moved on to reset of the zero and realized I couldn’t get spindle to go far enough forward to land on my pencil mark.
It may be possible that gantry movement was restricted during the jog (maybe the dust collection hose was stuck/caught on something?) and this caused lost steps. If so, re- initializing the machine should allow the spindle to move normally, assuming whatever inhibited movement is no longer an issue.
reinitialize, unless you’ve changed your zero it should stick fine overnight
(provided there isnt a blockage on the gantry, but the awful noise will alert you of that)
On the Jog screen if you select “move to current X/Y position” does it take you to the previous day’s zero or does it come up short as well?
