Carbide create Router

Today I was making plaques and my router started to grind away. When you first start it it like whistles and winds up and saunas like it’s going to fly off. Would the internal brushes be junk? I only had the xxl pro for a few months.

That sounds more like the bearings going.

Already? O brother I guess we will see if they will cover it since it’s only a few months old

Question/Suggestion: Are you using dust collection on your CNC?
If so, hopefully this is a fluke and the next one will last you much longer.
If not, your next router will still probably die within a few months.

I have great dust collection and still amazed at the material that comes out when I remove the collet. Maybe my chips aren’t big enough.

Yes I am, I have a 4.5 horse there is no dust or wood chips on my table while I am routing. I am so disappointed in the router. Hopefully carbide create stands by there product.

Since C3D makes the router there is more issues reported on the forum than other brands. Makita and Dewalt have problems but are likely not reported as much. The bearings seem to be a weak point as well as the brushes wearing out fast. If it is the bearings then with the power off just grab the collet and nut and wiggle. There should be no movement if good but will wiggle around if bearings are bad. If the bearings are bad you can buy the Makita rebuild kit from several sources. The C3D is a clone of the Makita. If it is not the bearings the just power up the router and see if it still makes noise. Dust collection can get things caught up in the tubes and make whistling noises.

Next time you replace your brushes measure them for length and check them every once in a while. I dont think the brushes can get more than about half way through the length till they need replacing. When the little wire gets to the shortest point the brushes start arching because they cannot make good contact with the armature of the motor. It would be a good idea to keep several pair around. The arching brushes can also cause disconnects due to the noise generated by the router.

Edit: I accidently added some unrelated info and removed it.

I pulled the brushes out and they are the same size as the 4 new ones that come with it. I used a mic and the are all within a few thousands. The collet does not wiggle at all. I change the collets a lot as I make plaques quite often. I use the 1/4 inch to do certain things and then 1/8 collet for the cutouts. Yesterday it was fine, today I was like what the heck is going on.

I place a sock on top of my router to help slow down the dust getting into it. I do not notice additional heat because of the slower air movement.
