CC Pro Build 743 hangs at 50% when calculating 3D finishing toolpath

Created a new 3D carve file with a 3D rough and a 3D finish toolpath. When calculating the 3D finish toolpath, it consistently hangs at 50% and then just stops calculating and then hangs at 0%.

I can no longer use the software and have to close it and reopen it to recover.

3d Rough toolpath is a 278 1/4 inch and the 3D finish is a 101 1/8 inch ball mill. I will be cutting the image out of PVC plastic because it will be an outdoor project. However, I have observed this behavior with other materials and bits.

Is this a known bug in the software or do I need to increase my feeds and speeds for the 3d finish.

On 764, it appears to hang on the finishing toolpath, but eventually does complete.

This is one of the cases we were trying to improve in a recent release- a very dense finishing toolpath that’s mostly one big pocket leads to appearant stalls, even though it’s still chugging along. It’s better in newer releases but it’s still a tough one to break down without deeper changes to the code. We’ll keep working on it.

You happen to have a very fine stepover, .007" for a .125" cutter. Why did you pick such a small value for the stepover?

Thanks Michael.

My build version is 743. Do I have to download the newer version? I do not see an option to update it in the software.

Updates are at Download Carbide Create .

(FYI- I’m going to close your support ticket since we got it here)

Hi Rob.

I chose that based on the 10 - 15% recommended by Kevin Barnett in some of the tutorial videos for the 3D finishing tool path. Is that no longer recommended?

How do I get an update to the latest release of CC Pro?

Kind regards,

Unless you need something finer, that would mean that a stepover of .012 to .018" would be a good starting point.

Pro is the same download from Download Carbide Create , it’s the license code that turns it into “Pro”

So I have to download and reinstall it versus having an option in the help about to update to the newer release?

It would also be nice to have some type of notification about new release updates. Maybe a notification when opening the software or even just an email update.

Thanks

What are good feeds and speeds beyond the default settings for cutting plastic (PVC) with the 1/4" and 1/8" single flute end mills?

Would like to cut down the cutting time as much as possible without melting the plastic.

Kind Regards,
Bryan M.

Slower RPM and higher feed rate.

I have done 10,000 and 100-120 IPM, but that was on large pockets, not 3D paths.
