CC v853+ and Linux

Asking for feedback…
If you are running Linux with CC above version 853.
Can you tell me what distro (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Arch, etc) is working for you?
I cannot get past 853…
Not worried about CM at this point
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
David

Around 853, we changed to Qt 6 from Qt 5, so if you’re running something like Wine, that might be a hint as to what the problem is.

Just installed the 563 beta with the Pro license on CachyOS (which is an Arch distro). I haven’t run it through its paces, but I was able to load in a past project which was a 3D relief of Crater Lake.

Thanks for the feedback! As that is not an OS I am not familiar with…any special customizations on your part to get CC up and running? I am setting up VirtualBox today to try out some different OS’s and see if I can find one that will let me load CC beyond 853. Any feedback on your CachyOS config would be greatly appreciated!

CachyOS (https://cachyos.org/) is just a flavor of Arch. I installed it because my main use is gaming and it comes pre-configured with NVIDIA drivers and the latest version of proton. So maybe it’s the proton installation? Honestly, I did not do anything to configure it. I just downloaded the Windows executable, double-clicked it in the file manager, and it just installed and worked.

I just did a second test install on the little Lenovo I have hooked up to my Shapeoko which is running Mint (https://linuxmint.com/) and I got the result you did. 853 runs fine, 863 does not. So it’s could be whatever version of wine or proton it’s running on. I’m not entirely sure how to see what specific version CC is running over.

The other difference is that my main workstation is running Wayland while my little computer is running X11, so that is another thing to test. It’s possible that QT6 plays nicer with Wayland.

Sorry I don’t have much more than that to go on.

Thanks for your response.
This is great feedback and gives me plenty of nuggets to go and chase!

I just switched my Mint from X11 to Wayland and v863 beta loads without problem.

Thank you for the feedback. I’m still “chasing”…some of my potential solutions only created other hurdles! Such is life! Luckily 853 works just fine on my current implementations!

Thank you to those that responded to this question!
I am documenting the solution that worked for me, and could possibly be useful for others.
Using Bottles I was able to get CC v863 (free) running today.
For anyone else attempting…

  • Download Windows (free) version of CC v863
  • Within Bottles (you may need to research & install) select “Run Executable” option on the downloaded CC installer. (I typically rename folders created in this process to explicitly state version number, then inside that folder rename carbidecreate.exe file to also explicitly state version number…this keeps it from being overwritten in any future install process.
  • Allow install process to complete. Rename folders and executable if desired, though NOT REQUIRED
  • Within Bottles use Add Shortcut Option - this will open a disk folder view, I had to open “drive_c” folder, then “Program Files” folder, then “CarbideCreate” folder, then select the carbide create.exe file (this is the actual program executable file, not the installation file)
  • Just right of the newly created and visible shortcut, select the 3 dots and pick “Change Launch Options’”
  • Under Preference Overrides enable DXVK, VKD3D, WineBridge, Gamescope, Virtual Desktop
  • Click Save
  • You should now be able to click the Play icon to the right of your newly created Carbide Create shortcut.
These are the steps that worked for me using the AnduinOS on a Dell All In One (8GB memory, Intel Core i5-6500 x 4, Intel HD Graphics 530) OS Info - Firmware version 1.16.0, AnduinOS 2.0.2, 64 bit, Gnome 50, Wayland, Linux Kernel 7.0.0-28-generic.
  • AnduinOS is an Ubuntu based Linux OS
  • Different Hardware & OS combinations could have different results…this is the “combination & configuration” that worked for me.
  • If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
