Cherry Oval Box (Disaster sort of)

I wanted to make a cherry oval box. I got the idea from Woodsmith plan from a recent article. You can download the plan from their site.

I did not like the ying yang so I modified the plan and made this.

The box took 3.5 hours to cut on my SO3. However to my horror there is a knot that I have to figure out how to fix.

I dont think filler would work so I may put some contrasting wood in the knot.

The lid took about an hour to cut out and then I had to flip it to put the engraving on the top.

The butterflies will get some red, yellow and purple color inside the wings.

I painted the wreath and butterflies with black acrylic paint. Sanded off the over paint. May just leave everything black.

I applied dewaxed shellac (Zinsser Universal Sanding Sealer) to keep the paint from haloing into the grain.

I will get back to this tomorrow. I have had enough tonight.

The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

Still a cool box either way, and I’m sure you’ll be able to salvage it. If it were up to me, I’d wrap the outside and bottom of the box with packing tape and try to backfill the defect with epoxy. Sand it down with a belt sander after and then buff it out.

I know in Walnut every social media maker seems to do black, but on a lighter wood I kind of like clear. I think it’s neat to still be able to look at the defect and feels like it’s preserving a part of the wood’s story. Maybe I’m weird.

Good idea. I have a turners meeting tomorrow. I will show to the members and see what others think. The epoxy idea has merit.

You’re not weird, you’re just like us!

I like the knot as it is, if I were to fill it would be with clear epoxy to show the defect, everything is not perfect. Like us….

So what did you end up doing? I missed this post somehow but would have given my 2 cents of try to accent the knot. For some reason I really like the way it looks. Improvisation to issues is sometimes part of the fun of woodworking (?) Maybe (?). But then again, my favorite projects are using pallet wood to make nice furniture. Rough, not perfect surfaces create a uniques that only wood can provide.

I decided to leave the defect in. The inside of the box was secure to items would not fall out. I applied 2 coats of Watco Danish Oil Natural. I may add another coat or two after it dries for a while.

There were a lot of things I could have done but in the end it is just a simple box that I will likely give away.

I think it’s pretty awesome looking!

Character in the wood makes it unique.
You will never find or make another one exactly the same.
