There you go! Up until only about a year or so ago I was using a Win7 (upgraded to Win10 at some point) laptop (Dell Inspiron 14R) from around 2010 for my CM machine. It ran CM fine but it took a few minutes to load Firefox if I wanted to cruise the web.
Not always sure what’s appropriate for this forum, but I will mention that I have two computers that are ‘officially’ unable to run Windows 11, as they do not meet hardware requirements. One is an older Alienware desktop, and one is a 2014 MacBook Pro.
I was able to install and run Windows 11 successfully on both with the following steps:
- Download the Windows 11 iso from Microsoft.
- Create an installer on a USB drive using the utility named ‘Rufus’, which has options to disable hardware compatability checks. You can also disable the requirement to create a Microsoft account on installation.
- Install from the USB.
- Activate with the help of MAS (GitHub)
Both computers are happily running Windows 11 with no issues whatsoever.
I guess this could be an option for people who think they are stuck on Windows 10.
Thanks all glad to hear everyone’s personal take it all helps. The more I get a feel for working with and around the 2x4 machine I’m leaning towards a fanless mini PC, touch monitor on a movable arm, and some form of hand controller.
I read the MAS loophole was shutdown a few days ago. I try to stick to supported configurations in case something goes wrong I know I can recreate it.
I’ve been using a Surface Pro 6. It works pretty good.
Over the last 20 years my company has found that Dell Refurbished computers have a significantly longer lifespan that brand new Dell systems. Dell uses subpar parts in their systems and were sued in the past for knowingly selling systems with defective parts to customers. During that lawsuit it was found that Dell knowingly sold their own lawyers defective servers. However the refurbished systems they sell have actually gone through a much higher level of quality control screening than their new systems.
Dang, I hope that’s not true.
Anyway, just looking for ways to keep old computers in service with the end of Windows 10. Could always go the Fedora route – although lately I’m really having fun playing with Bazzite.
Oddly enough, my 2014 MacBook Pro is way, way faster running Windows 11 than the slightly outdated version of OSX that Apple allows.

Amazing
I bought an HP/Win 11 laptop on sale, and it doubles as my machine interface. The workstation arm is fastened to the right side of the table and folds up and away when not in use. Very happy with how it all turned out
