Cremation Urn and Shapeoko

I was asked to make a cremation urn. The circumstances make you appreciate how you have it in life. This urn if for a woman’s husband she lost 2 years ago. About 2 months ago she woke up and smelled smoke and ran out in her pajamas and lost everything she had. I had donated some furniture to help her out because she lost everything she had but miraculously her husband’s ashes were returned to her. They were in a cheap wooden box to start with. So I make a segmented urn out of Peruvian Walnut. I used a 3.5" bronze threaded ring at the top. I will be delivering it to Houston next Friday.

The name and Born to Rock was requested by the man’s mother. It was an advanced vcarve with #122 (1/32") and a 15 Degree vee bit. I used acrylic gold paint on the lettering.

This is the 3rd urn I have made for other people. On Tuesday night a good friend called and informed me his wife had passed away. He wanted me to make an urn for her. I have to get hopping because it takes a while to make a segmented urn because of the glue drying process. Today I got the rings cut out and glued up. Tomorrow I will flatten them and start gluing up. I have to glue up about 4 rings and let them dry and hollow out the inside. If you get too much distance it is hard to turn and can be dangerous. After the first section is turned I will use a steady rest on the lower part and glue on another 4 rings. This project has 11 rows. The top two will have the threaded bronze rings.

FYI the glued up rings are sitting on top of my new assembly/work bench with the MicroJig MatchFit system installed. Been a busy week.

The bottom will be a solid piece of glued up wood.

That is a beautiful urn. A very honourable thing for you to do for them and their departed loved ones. I’m sure they appreciate your excellent work more than us forum community members do.

You are a good soul. It’s an honor to see your work. Thanks

I finished a 2nd urn. This one will be used on Saturday at a funeral and is only ceremonial. The family will take it home. The person will be interred in a Mausoleum at a cemetery Saturday afternoon. The cemetery provides a metal urn.

Since this one is only ceremonial it only has an inner capacity of 130 Cubic Inches. The internal capacity is very important if cremated remains are stored. The rule of thumb is the person’s weight is roughly the cubic inches needed for an urn. My SegCalc application I designed the urn in will calculate the internal volume. I need to finish by making a finial tonight or tomorrow. The hard part of making it is finished. The finial will take about 15 minutes to make.

My Shapeoko 3 XXL with HDZ was used for the engraving. Someone here on the forum asked for my files. I wrote up how I made the urns. I will attach that. The project is a hybrid of turning on a lathe and the Shapeoko.
