Hi folks. Why do cutouts require the 201 flat end mill to do two concentric passes to cut out material? It should be fine with one circle right? Is there a way to stop this? It effectively doubles the time for cutouts. I’m probably missing some concept. Thanks!
I can’t speak to the software “requiring” it, but depending on depth you want to avoid “Slotting” as much as possible. Two passes give the cutter some room instead of rubbing up against the substrate on both sides all the way down. That can cause a ruined peice. Ask me how I know.
That there are two passes is a feature.
There is a control for this:
When it is set to “Auto Select” then the application will choose either Normal or Wide based on the interaction of the tool diameter and the stock thickness.
Chip removal needs to be considered. @cheu is correct, slotting is the most abusive cutting action. It’s is also unavoidable. Limit the effects.
Create a narrow pocket. The space on the side of the bit will allow faster cutting.
I use %50 speed if I really have to slot.
Thanks everyone! That was super valuable info that I was for sure missing!
