Hi all-
We’ve had our S03 XXL for a while now and within the last year have had issues with the cutter losing connection to our PC with increasing frequency. Originally it appeared to be related to the harmonics created when using 1/8" shank tools. We would run a program with 1/4" tools to rough things out and as soon as the detail work started with the 1/8" shank tools the issues would arise. Regardless of the DOC we battle a constant loss of connection. I contacted a friend who also purchased his S03 around the same time ( he was the main influence) and he told me there was a warranty replacement of the PCB that came with our controller that may be linked to the issue we are experiencing but this was circa 2017, and we’re well beyond our 12 month warranty period, but we never received notification of the issue or resolution that was available. Has anyone experienced something similar? Is the revised controller PCB available to us? Looking for any help. Thank you!
Write in to support@carbide3d.com — folks who are out of warranty are given a link for buying the replacement controller from a hidden page in our shop.
I’d be surprised if you don’t have a 2.4e though — while it’s possible it’s a degradation of the components of the controller, it’s more likely to be environmental — have you changed the carbon brushes in your router recently?
I had a loose shield on the USB port and bought a replacement from C3D. The board was $99.00 and had free shipping. This was about 6 months ago I had a 2.4e board but was also from 2017 and the connector for the BitRunner was not on my old board. The new board had the connector already on it for the BitRunner.
You could have a bad board but have you went through the basics of static elimination. There are many threads on the forum about reducing static. The router does not know which router bit is in the router so not sure why an 1/8 inch bit would make more static than a 1/4 inch bit but anything is possible. Are you milling wood or plastic?
Not likely environment due to the shop being climate controlled 24/7/365 and underground. Also the issue only appears to be with 1/8 shank tools hence my assumption it’s harmonics.
Never heard of static issues but we also weren’t aware of the S03 forums. Pretty disappointed to learn about the PCB issue. Why was there never a email/phone call about it? Seems to cause lots of problems for most users who had it.
I can plow away with 1/4" tools through wood, AL and plastics without issue. I checked our USB this morning after seeing your response and ordered a replacement just to be sure and start with the simple things. We’ll start there and see where that gets us.
Thank you for the info!
By environmental, I mean external to the machine.

Same problem with the new Shapeoko Pro. I have strapped the USB connector and then had no more problems. Except for moving the old laptop to much. Again USB but on the other side. I have 10 years in electronics distribution for microcontrollers and embedded computers… My experienced is in general that the USB connectors are usually the weakest link. Can be something else of cause. -connector soldering with some tension which has cracked?
