My 1/4 inch #201 seems to get itself loose from the Carbide Compact router after 30 mins or so of cutting.
I’m not running any aggressive feeds or speeds. I’m running at 60 in/min into walnut with a .2" depth and a .05 stepover. I crank the bit as hard as I can, and then sometime later it gets itself loose.
Not sure what to do. Has anyone else run into this issue?
The endmill and collet should be clean and free of grease/oil.
Please note that we recommend using the button only to hand-tighten things so that it will stay in place while one fully tightens with a good quality pair of wrenches, 13mm, low profile and 22mm stubby.
Make sure the bit isn’t going up too far when you put it in. Only put it in so that the top of the bit is at or just above the collet top. The collet will pull the bit up as it’s tightened so it needs a bit of room to go up. Also starting with a really clean collet helps.
I was using my router table and removed the 1/2" collet. I could see the router shaft and collet were dirty. I got some qtips and sprayed brake cleaner on them and cleaned out the router shaft. I just held the collet and sprayed it out. Having a dirty router shaft/collet can make the bit turn out of round and come loose.
If this persists replace the collet. C3D sells them and eclairecorp.com sells good ones.
As @WillAdams said tighten with button to keep bit from falling out but final tightening with 2 wrenches.
Clean and inspect the collet, if there is any marking on the inside of the collet or the outside of the collet taper, replace it. Also check the taper on the inside of the router spindle, if that is scarred you may have a problem.
