Cutting through material (not on purpose)

I have a question and it may have a simple answer. I uploaded an image into Vcarve Pro and created the vectors. I chose a v-carve with a 60 degree bit with a pass depth of 0.4 with my material thickness being 0.75. When I ran the simulation it said it would cut through the material with a pass depth of 3.291. My goal is not to cut through the material…what am I doing wrong? Thanks

Pass depth is not maximum depth. It’s how deep it’ll go each pass. Flat Depth will limit depth. Maybe you should look at limiting the area your Vcarving.

So you see that big triangular space in the corners of your design? When you select a v-carve toolpath, the program will assume you want a shape from line to line. Since you’re using a 60 deg v-bit, that will create a shape with 30 degree sides that will keep going until the sides meet.

For simplicity sake, lets think about a 90 degree v-bit and a box 2" x 2". If you tell the program to v-carve that box, what will happen? The program will keep cutting until all the sides meet in the middle. So you’ll have an inverted pyramid, 1" deep at the center with sides at a 45 degree slope.

To avoid this, you set your flat depth to whatever your pyramid to go to. You’ll still get 45 degree sides, but it will stop at your flat depth, and then try to clear out all the remaining material with the v-bit. If you use a “flat depth tool” to clear out the material it will look much better.

2x2 box vcarve in a 2" thick material

2x2 box vcarve with a 1/2" flat depth, just the v-bit

2x2 box vcarve with a 1/2" flat depth, flat tool first

and then v-carved

:pray:t2::pray:t2::pray:t2: Thank you! That makes sense new user so had seen the flat bottom option but had never known what it was for.
