Cutting to a Drawing

As a newbie, many of my questions may seem silly to you CNC “old-timers”, but I really appreciate you accommodating my ignorance.

I will be routing outlines for objects that will require a lot of detailed hand carving for the interior. This will involve drawing the details on the wood. Is there a way to line the machine up with the drawn lines prior to cutting, or is it better to draw the details on the wood once the CNC work is completed?

I find it easier to add details as the project progresses and as a final step.

Post the files you are working on?

and if you do need to line up the CNC operations with something drawn on the piece at some point, you can easily do this using e.g. a V-bit for manually setting X0/Y0 on a precise point of your drawing, using the paper method (and then, swap the tool for whatever you will actually be using for the cut, and only reset Z0, leaving X0/Y0 unchanged)

You could also draw the hand carved schematic with the CNC machine, pens are made for this purpose. That way you can set up fences or other methods that allow for subsequent re-positioning if it’s necessary to remove and replace your stock. (Sorry, I don’t have a link; I’ve not used a pen myself but have seen them in my internet searches for drag bits and drag knives.)

Thanks. That’s an idea.
