Damaged bit setter wire

Hope everyone is well!

I had to move my Shapeoko, and when doing so I managed to rip the wire for my bitsetter into two pieces. Is there anything I need to know before I solder the wires back together? Are these special wires of some sort, that require special treatment? Or can I just grab my soldering iron and go to town?

I’d recommend unplugging the Shapeoko first if the other end of the cable is still plugged in the controller board. I’m a paranoid EE and always did it that way.

I would replace the entire wire.
If it has been stretched to breaking, it may have other breaks/shorts.

That’s a good point. I think it’s likely only that one spot, but maybe a quick email to C3D support is warranted.

If I just repair that spot and then test the whole line for continuity, would that be enough?

Yes, that would be good enough, but I would also put a little tension on the wire while checking it to “stretch” and find any other problems. You could have pulled a wire loose at the connection point inside the bitsetter.

Solder it. If it doesn’t work, worry about the other stuff. If I recall correctly, the cable is integrated in the sensor. You may need a replacement proximity sensor if you get to that point.
