Fired up my 4XL today, initialised and then set it to fast move to front centre. It got about half way there and the right carriage stopped/jammed with an alarming juddering noise. I hit the power switch and gently moved the carriage by hand. It went back okay but jammed in the same place when moved forward. After some careful examination I noticed a rough area on the top of the rail (photo attached) but am not sure if this is cause or symptom.
Any one experienced this or have any clues as to cause/remedy?
Looks cosmetic — usually the plastic of the V wheels will ride over such defects — if they are bad enough to cause a discontinuity of movement then they can be filled in w/ a metal-impregnated epoxy such as J.B. Weld.
Check in w/ support@carbide3d.com if this doesn’t address things.
If it is cosmetic like @WillAdams suggests you might try the 3M finishing pads to help clean it up. The 3M finishing pads are not really abrasive so wont damage you any further but if it is external to the aluminum rail it will remove it. I use the white (fine) to clean up my rails when I do regular maintenance.
In case it helps anyone else -
I started to strip the side and carriage down to better smooth the rail and found the real culprit. One of the rather tiny black grub screws had fallen out of the stepper motor drive wheel and was running up and down, trapped between the carriage, rail and v-wheels. So the scratching was a symptom rather than the cause but I was thrown off because the slight roughness was causing it to scotch the wheel in the same place every time.
