My X-axis is no longer moving. While carving a pocket, the machine moved further to the right than it should have cutting a noticeable gouge out of an otherwise circular pocket. I noticed and hit pause right away before stopping completely. I looked for any obvious problems with the belt and servo assembly like a broken belt or debris, but found nothing. I decided to re-initialize the machine but the X-axis didn’t move at all. Additionally it was making noise as though it was bumping up against the limit of travel despite being roughly centered over the table. Do I have a bad servo? What kind of fault tree analysis can I go through?
I would first check to see if the gear on the stepper motor has slipped. But you said it does not move. Do you hear the stepper motor engage?
Next I would find the connections for the stepper motors to see if they are connected soundly. Look at the connection to see if there might be heat related issues from a bad connection. Also check the controller board to see if the connection is still sound.
The grinding sound is the stepper losing steps as it tried to turn. May be X or Y or Z if the bit became pinched.
Good luck, Let us know

With power off, SLOWLY move X to see if it is free.
I’ll check the other things, but the X is frozen in place with the power off. I tried to move it manually and it’s firmly stuck.
With power off it should move freely. You have a mechanical problem.
