Does this "shaving" mean my speeds/feeds need adjusting

I’m routinely seeing these LOOOONG corkscrew chips at the top of all cuts. (more often with soft woods) Mostly just require some edge sanding. My surfaces look smooth otherwise, the spindle isn’t screaming and no burning so I think i’ve got my speeds ok.

Pine board, 1/4" upcut 4 fluted bit, spindle a hair over 3 (I think 18k RPM ish) 100imp, with 2.5mm downcut.

Hope I’m giving enough info…super noob here and just fat fingering my way through.

Do those shavings mean I should adjust my speeds up/down? I’ve toyed with spindle speed and adjusted the multiply % on carbide motion on the fly but up or down doesn’t seem to make much/any difference so I think it might just be normal. From watching videos though I usually don’t see these weird long spiral chips/splinters at the top of the cuts.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Wood can be quite forgiving:

Soft wood likes to do that when you use an up cut bit. A down cut bit will help in correcting that issue.

Ahhh many thank yous!! That makes sense. I did find a hacky work around right after I posted…I put painters tape down over the piece before cutting…I’m not sure how good that is for the bit…but no more curly Q.

Another bit for the “to be ordered” list…I should have amana on amazon auto order.

The tape gum on the bit can be removed with many things from WD40 to Thinner. Your choice
