Emblems on wavy flags, three different approaches

as requested on support…

need a bit of help getting the emblem correct.

where the current state is:

The drawn geometry runs into the classic arts problem, “figure-ground reversal” and there are three notable approaches which will be examined here:

  • drawing in geometry so as to adjust the nature of the design so that it may be subtracted en masse
  • Sub-dividing the emblem and selecting portions of it and applying different treatments to the various design aspects
  • causing the 3D design where the emblem is to appear to be flat and level and just doing a traditional V-carving

The easiest approach is to simply force the central round area to be flat:

Apply

and then apply a V-carving to everything on the emblem layer:

except for the perimeter which we shift-click to remove from the selection:

The balance of the design is of course 3D toolpaths:

So select the perimeter circle and some piece of geometry which defines the surrounding design:

(note that the outer perimeter may need to be offset to the outside)

and if desired, a second 3D Finishing toolpath along the grain:

A second approach would be to select specific elements:

and model them separately and in sequence, but doing so requires an awareness of the Stock Thickness:

and what seems to be the thickest portion of the design:

and the lowest

We will assume that the stock is 1" thick and that an additional 0.08" of thickness may be added:

Show 3D

(which seems to mean that we need to adjust Stock Thickness)

Then it is a matter of selecting the balance of the emblem design:

and then subtracting from the raised region:

and where appropriate, selecting:

or sub-selecting:

Then subtracting the balance of the design:

adjusting until one arrives at the desired effect:

Since the design is fully 3D, then 3D toolpaths may be made as described at:

For the third and final option, we add an additional circle to keep the interior one distinct:

Done

and do not include the outer circle in the selection:

as before, adjusting until one arrives at the desired result.

Thank you for the detailed walk through. I know this is probably remedial, but on the first example, I cant get a v-carve toolpath:

What do you have selected for the V-carve?

I selected the entire emblem, 197 selctions.

Will, I was able to successfully toolpath the job. I use the first method you showed and I got it set up. Tomorrow I will start the carve. I will keep you posted. Thank you. I actually learned a lot from this one! Thank you.
