Empty Toolpath for curved line

Plan to V carve a line that simulates ocean waves across a plaque, however it is an “Empty Toolpath” How do I close the toolpath and correct this? Thanks

Post a screengrab and further description and upload your file?

where is the upload to post the screenshot?

Upload button, or drag/paste images into the text box.

empty toolpath for ocean wave

Thanks,

That line is pink/magenta. That means it’s an open curve. V-carve needs closed curves.

YOu can use a Contour path, and set the offset direction to “No Offset”, then set the depth you want.

You will want to duplicate the surrounding geometry and cut it so that it can be combined with the wave line — which is unjoined (indicated by being magenta).

Or, inset the shield shape and then use Trim Vectors to remove what is not needed, then combine.

If you’ll upload the .c2d file we can walk through this with you.

I’ll get the other laptop fired up and send the file, thanks for your help. Greatly appreciated. I am using a shapeoko 5 pro and cutting in pine.

this is going to be the first of several test runs, therefore the depth cuts are pretty shallow.

One way to do this would be to:

inset the geometry:

Select the other geometry:

and use Trim Vectors to remove what is not wanted:

OK

OK

Use Join Vectors:

Yes

which may now have any desired sort of toolpath assigned:

though this then requires modifying the toolpaths inside that region if they are not included (which would cause them to stand proud):

Great suggestions, however why does the advanced V carve for the waves cut center “tree” vs following the outline? First trial cut File attached, thank you in advance.

You use a V carving toolpath (which cuts along the centerline):

Rather than an Advanced V carving:

Note that you will need to either include the text in that toolpath:

Or, edit the toolpaths which incise the text to start at the bottom of the previous pocket:
