Engraving bit not coming in contact with material

Hello,

I’m trying to learn how to engrave in aluminum (5052-H32 and 6061-T6) and I’m testing out different bits to see which one works the cleanest.

Currently, I’m testing a Whiteside 1540 V-Groove 60-Degree 1/4-Inch. I’ve gotten it to work a couple of times however most of the time after probing the bit stops right at the material and doesn’t come in contact. I’ve tried probing Z axis, X,Y,Z axis, paper method all with the same results. What is it that I’m missing here?

I read that I could manually change the Z “0” in CM but I believe I’m doing something wrong and shouldn’t have to do that each time.
