Engraving stainless steel

I am trying to make a plate for a retirement gift and the material given to me was steel. I have tried the MC Etcher 90 and it does it but it is not that noticeable. What other bit could I use for this?

The M.C. Etcher should work — might have to experiment w/ the pre-load on the spring.

I did that but it only goes so deep no matter the spring settings.

Post photos?

is the diamond tip (still) in good condition?

It seems OK. I also thought painting it first then engraving it. Im just going to bring some aluminum home and try that.

Im pretty sure I’ve done the engraver bot on stainless, but I’d have to check my box of random materials.

The 90º MC Etcher and a texture toolpath works really well together on 304 stainless. I believe with z zero set at no preload, and a depth of cut at .010 is what I used.

There are several grades of stainless too. Some much harder such as 304/316. Some might engrave better such as 400-series or 303.

I went with aluminum and it turned out perfect with a 1/32 endmill at a depth of .001. I broke my new MC Etcher drag bit on the steel
