Created the files for this table that my husband made. It is a very rudimentary design of an Asheville manhole cover that he painted to look like metal. And then an acorn design from etsy on a lower shelf (that is really just for show). Can’t believe how amazing this machine is! Thanks to everyone who has been helping me out in the Shapeoko 5 forum!
That’s a pretty nice looking thing to carve if you’re new to this. Can’t wait to see more.
Well it certainly wasn’t the first pass! LOL. Now hubbie wants me to make all the spaces between things a certain size so he can be more efficient with bit changes
I’ll know to think about that next time.
Tricia, usually one would do an array copy around the 360 which can/will add a consistent spacing between parts. One would have to do a little math to find out how many of those parts plus space would fit around the perimeter area, but its purty easy to do. (The original part’s mold maker probably did that.)
Looks really nice (and realistic), so you get a +1! ![]()
thanks so much!! my husband is a woodworker/artist and made gorgeous tables from actual manhole covers for a long time but after Hurricane Helene (we are in AVL) instead of having more supply we have zero of the real thing because the local metal salvage said the city won’t let them sell the old ones anymore. So desparate times required desparate measures. Haha! I will try it using an array copy!!
Don’t make it look too precise/perfect. The occasional rounded corner and dent here or there that you have on the current one make it look more authentic with years of abuse.
Definitely anything you can do to minimize bit changes is a plus though so having the gaps between those squares large enough to accommodate the same bit is good.
What material is the main part?
For the lower shelf maybe a 3D carve of a rat swimming by would add to the realism ![]()
OMG the rat is genius! Haha!! the main ring is cabinet grade plywood from Lowes since he is painting it anyway and you can get it in decent widths without joining the wood. The lower shelf is pecan I think.
The acorn design is a classy touch.
I may have been inclined to make the face of a guy wearing a hard hat looking up ![]()

Love it!! LOL. Or maybe a clown face a la Stephen King’s Pennywise ![]()
And I could change it to say Derry, Maine ![]()
Or, perhaps:
so many sewer appropriate options! LOL!
Very cool. At least being made from plywood it won’t crush your feet if someone knocks it over. ![]()
The manhole looks great!
I did an Indian Head Nickle bank some time back and actually found a paint at Menards called Nickle paint. You might want to give that a try some day also. The bank looked exactly like a nickle!!
