First inlay file

Hello folks

I’m doing a serving board , last minute request from a friend for a silent auction benefit and he asked for an Astros inlay.

First attempt with my 2 yr old Pro 5 and CC pro.

I was wondering if I could impose on someone to have a quick look at my file and see if it looks Kosher.

(just off the grill, still needs finishing of course)

I already did the inlay carve and ready to cut the plug but Im a little unsure about the plug depth and gap numbers.

many thanks - Chris

Your female pockets are 0.120 deep.

Your male-plug side is a total of 0.150", which sounds good.
Plug depth of 0.100 does not leave a lot of play if there is any deflection or overcutting on the female pocket.

I would start out with something more like Plug Depth: 0.050 and Top Gap 0.100", and then fit it and adjust if necessary. Make sure you clamp the male side low, or wide enough that you can fit the female side to it without removing it from the machine.

I would also recommend measuring a detail that’s easy to measure on the female side. i.e. The width of the legs & crossbar on the “H” are about 0.289".

If the V-bit you used was not perfectly sharp, it may cut the features a bit wider than designed.

Thanks Todd working it now!

Looks like I had those gap and top numbers backwards

edit

wonder if I should add another path on either side of the H and star and use a 1/4" instead of the 1/16 to clear out all that space?

You had them right, I just suggested to start ‘bigger’ because you can always remove more material. You can’t add material back on  (You can, but it doesn’t look so good)
