First real project: Hawaiian-Themed Paradise Box

One of the best hobbyist level pieces I’ve seen. Glad you chose to use such a fine quality wood as mahogany. Way to go!

Beautiful box! You have a lot to be proud of with that piece! I like the designed use of the grains…very nicely done.

Regarding flaws: I read a story many years ago in Fine Woodworking from a woodworker who gave his wife a Grandfather’s Clock for their anniversary. When he unveiled it she asked, “Where is it?” He knew that she meant, “where is the flaw?”, because as he put it, he didn’t have the skills or patience of a Tage Frid or a Nakashima…and there was always a flaw. So he pointed out in the lower corner, where he had slipped with his chisel and had patched his gouge. She looked the piece over and said, “I love it!”.

He said, “You love it even though it has a flaw?”

To which she replied, “No…I love it BECAUSE of the flaw!”

I always liked that story.

Thanks!

My partner is a fan of “wabi-sabi”, or “flawed beauty”, and she feels like the mistakes make the piece. That’s how I feel when I see her art, but somehow can’t internalize it when it’s me!
