First time haveing trouble with my shapeoko 5

Hello, so i was running a program this morning and had to stop it and reset the program. when i sent it back to its home the left Y started making a bit of a grinding noise, so i hit the E stop and tried again and now it dosent go to its home correctly the X goes all the way to the limit switch no problem but the y just makes a strange noise when it reaches the back. Ive checked to see if there are any loose connections or possable loose moter screws and every thing looks fine. when i move the gantry by hand i can see that the lights for the y limit swich turn on when moving… if anyone can give me any advice on this id really appreciate it,

There are some likely culprits.

  1. The ball screw couplers can become loose on an SO5.
  2. The rails need lubrication. This can be as simple as wiping down the rails with the Vactra #2 oil.
  3. There is an obstruction some where. That could be a vacuum hose or a big bugger on the ball screws.
  4. The connectors have been somewhat problematic on some SO5 machines. So double check all the connectors and at each connector if the two wires are meeting in the middle without a connector being pushed out of the connection.

Stepper motors work by a rotating field on the two fields inside the motor. First one field is activated and then the next causing rotation. If one field is not being activated then you get a jerky motion.
