Hello, so i was running a program this morning and had to stop it and reset the program. when i sent it back to its home the left Y started making a bit of a grinding noise, so i hit the E stop and tried again and now it dosent go to its home correctly the X goes all the way to the limit switch no problem but the y just makes a strange noise when it reaches the back. Ive checked to see if there are any loose connections or possable loose moter screws and every thing looks fine. when i move the gantry by hand i can see that the lights for the y limit swich turn on when moving… if anyone can give me any advice on this id really appreciate it,
There are some likely culprits.
- The ball screw couplers can become loose on an SO5.
- The rails need lubrication. This can be as simple as wiping down the rails with the Vactra #2 oil.
- There is an obstruction some where. That could be a vacuum hose or a big bugger on the ball screws.
- The connectors have been somewhat problematic on some SO5 machines. So double check all the connectors and at each connector if the two wires are meeting in the middle without a connector being pushed out of the connection.
Stepper motors work by a rotating field on the two fields inside the motor. First one field is activated and then the next causing rotation. If one field is not being activated then you get a jerky motion.
