Fixture for engraving 4x4 slate coasters

I needed / wanted to make a bunch and I wanted something I could quickly swap the slate pieces in and out of and maintain my X/Y zero (the thickness of the slate varies both in thickness and in variance across the same piece - setting your Z zero is a per piece that you just need to get a feel for and sometimes even then, you don’t always get it right).

Turns out, there is some size and squareness variance so adjustability for each piece was going to be needed.

I came up with a jig that held the coaster by the edges using a groove the tapered edge could slot into.

Here are a few pics:

“Open” position

“Closed-ish” position

Some details on the fixture:

The Philips are #10 and hold the fixture to my solid spoil board

  • The adjustment locking screws are #10 flanged machine screws going into threaded inserts on the bottom part of the jig (insert holes are 6.35mm in diameter)
  • The “tail” has a screw slot but that turned out to be a pain so I just switched to using a hold down to secure that corner of the jig
  • One of the modern PLA+ filaments work great for this (even in my unconditioned shop in the Chicago area where it gets freezing cold during the winter and smokin’ hot on days like today
