Fodder for heightmaps

I’m debating the upgrade to CC Pro but, outside of the online “sale page” summary I don’t find any detailed info but for the tedious scouring of the forum. Is it possibly true there is no manual?

Anyway, one of my preliminary questions is in the use of heightmaps for 3D carving. I understand a simple photo won’t suffice since it’s gradient is a function of light direction versus distance from the viewer. I’m thinking I can maybe stretch my artistic talents (to the max!) and, using a photograph as a template, draw a series of topographic like lines filled with various shades of gray then apply a Gaussian blur. I did a quick little test, using only 4 shades, and produced the following JPEG image. Is this suitable input/format for CC Pro’s carving modality? (The tutorials and examples in the forum either use STL’s or Pro’s pre-fabs.) Is there an image file-type which works best in this regard?

I wrote up a bit on Carbide Create at:

and

and covered Pro at:

The file you have would import well:

Import Image:

Just adjust the parameters as desired:

(Note that you may want to go back and fill in the surrounding area in black)
