This PhD thesis from MIT is well worth taking some time to read through.
Even without following the maths (it’s a PhD thesis) the descriptions of damping in chapter 4, especially the construction and use of constrained layer damping for structural beams in the machine are worth reading through.
The use of bolted interfaces as damping in the machine where materials such as aluminium with poor loss factors are used is also illuminating.
