Full depth finishing pass on 2” deep contour leaves tool mark

Hello!

I’m cutting an almost 2” deep circle with a contour out of a block of hardwood with a depth of cut of .03 and want to do a second (finishing?) pass to reduce the sanding needed on the outer edges of the product.

If I start that path at the full depth of the stock, I see a vertical gouged line where the tool is lowered that can’t easily be removed with sanding—defeating the purpose.

If I do another full pass with a .03 DOC it looks fine, but I double the carving time. Is there a way around this?

What tool are you using?

Leave a roughing clearance and take a finishing pass?

CC only has “plunge” engages. You could draw a path in like this & contour (profile) cut it so the tool starts off the part.

Note, the circular engages are connected to separate ends of an open curve…

Every tool I’ve tried

Awesome. I’ll try it. Thanks!
