I bought and installed the gas strut for my S5P with the 65mm VFD spindle – but do I really need it? The support column for the strut is constantly snagging my dust collection hose. If I remove the gas strut and am I going to run into any issues with the spindle crashing onto the table at power-off?

You shouldn’t need it.
Remove the strut and see if your z axis falls down when powered off.
If it stays up I wouldn’t run it if it’s causing you issues.
I have the 65mm VFD spindle mounted in a HDZ and have never seen the spindle drop to the spoil board. I believe the gas strut was recommended for the folks running the 80mm. Pull it off and see what it does over night. Also, check out the item description. I’m sure you’ll be OK.
The strut was for the 80mm spindle, my ER11 65mm spindle works fine without it.
Thanks everybody for the comments. I’ve removed the strut and the spindle seems totally fine without (and now the hose isn’t snagging on anything).
