Fairly new CNC user here. I have just gone and checked on a 3d bread plate that I have on the Shapeoko 5 right now, left side is perfect, currently on 3d finish with 1/16 tapered ball end with 10% Stepover and smooth as a baby’s backside however, right side is terribly scalloped. What would be the cause of the right side being so bad compared to the left?
It looks like your part has moved upwards (towards the bit) since you cut the plate’s flat surface. Something happened in the Z direction between finishing passes.
It isn’t just the right or left sides. It is also happening at the top.
Did this part sit for a long time between finishing passes? Did you move the machine between passes? Just guessing.
The job was about ~5hrs total so it was a longish one. The finish pass in the photo being the longest at 3.5hrs The roughing was about 70mins. The material seemed to be quite secure but I can’t say for sure it didn’t move. My zero XY corner bracket seemed to suggest no movement. This hasn’t happened on any other projects so I didn’t have any idea as to what could be the cause. I think I will cut this one again and see if the same thing happens.
Check your tool settings over.
You said you were using a Tapered 1/16th ballnose and a 10% stepover, = 0.0063 stepover?
That looks like a much larger stepover. maybe around 0.063.?
The only time I have seen something similar was caused by resin and dust buildup on the tip of the bit…?
