Investment cast my own blend of silver. Black vitreous enamel. Originally cut from 2mm wax with a 1/32 endmill.
Appreciate the inspiration ![]()
I really want to get set up for small vacuum investment casting this year. I’ve done a bit of sand casting in bronze but silver is on my list to get comfortable with…just so dang expensive.
The vitreous enamel is another big reason I want to start playing with it. Inlaying is cool and all but enameling is just so interesting for jewelry.
Sigh The list is long and the days are short.
OK here is the chamber, had a buddy make it for me in a couple of hours for beer, scrap from the shop. You need a kiln for burnout and enameling. I just bought and E14 from paragon. They usually have demos or lightly used school kilns available for 1/2 price retail, still not cheap but around $1500. Bought a good vacuum pump off FB and a cheap stainless chamber. If your using silver all you need is a torch for melting with a small ceramic crucible. Don’t scrimp on the investment but the good stuff from a jewelry supply place. Hope that helps
Silver prices have skyrocketed lately. What type of ratio of silver are you using. Very nice work. It is amazing what is being made in garages all over the place. My wife used to do pottery and the kiln made the light meter spin off the wall. You had to have it on for a long period to warm up, fire the pottery and so on.
I buy fine silver bars - 1 oz from the bank and mix it with a white copper master alloy. Sterling Silver sucks for enameling unless you depletion gild it but fine silver is too soft and scratches to easy. It seems what ever medium I try to work in the price goes bananas. Copper then silver and aluminum too! It’s a necessary evil.
