Homing freezes upon hitting limit switch

Hello… I have a Shapeoko XL using CM4 and GRBL 1.1f. I’ve had my machine for a year or so with no issues, but the other day I got a new error during the homing cycle.

The machine first homes to z, no problem there. Then it backs to home y, and the second it hits the limit switch everything freezes. CM thinks for a bit and then gives an error that the homing switch can’t be found. Connections look good and each light illuminates on the control board when I press each limit switch manually. Even once everything freezes, the blue y limit switch light remains illuminated.

Any thoughts? TIA!

Does your X axis attempt to home? It should move with Y.
Check the stepper connections there.

Yep, what @neilferreri says. Check those Molex connectors, if any feel hot cut ‘em out and solder the connections.

Thanks for the replies… I’ve been on vacation and haven’t had much time to look at things until today.

So I’ve pinpointed the issue to the stepper motor connections on the control board itself. So currently when I power the machine, the x-axis motor is still free to spin, while the others lock. Now, if I swap the connections on the control board, say the x-axis with the z-axis, the x-axis becomes locked and the z-axis moves freely.

Just wondering where to go from here…

Check all the wiring and connectors — if there’s nothing obvious to correct, contact us at support@carbide3d.com if you haven’t, let us know what you’ve found out, and we’ll do our best to work this out with you.

thanks, it appears to be something with the control board itself… i’ll send over an email, thanks!
