How to get started on flourishes?

Hi community.

Can anyone explain how to (or point me at a resource) create these sorts of flourishes that might appear in the corner of a rosette moulding or box lid? Is this something that can be accomplished with Vcarve? What bit is needed? Anyone know of existing patterns?

I’m running Carbide Create (free version) and a Shapeoko Pro 4.

Thanks!
Dave

One traditional term for this is fleuron, “printer’s flowers”, one style for this sort of design is called Sheridan.

The Craftsmanspace folks have some files:

Given a suitable vector such designs should cut well as V carvings.

And if you want to make your own, you can make a simple black and white image and convert it to a vector with Inkscape - among many other programs - and have your own design that no one else has.

Depending on your level of comfort / expertise with graphics programs, you could:

  1. Download the flourishes that @WillAdams linked and use them as they are or mix them up (if you know how)

  2. Keep it as simple as drawing it out with a pen on paper and taking a picture of it to convert to vector.

  3. #2 above, but only draw half of the corner so you can mirror it in the graphics program so both sides are symmetrical.

  4. Draw it in MS paint or PowerPoint other object based program and screenshot it and convert it to vector.

  5. Draw it in Inkscape or Affinity or whatever other program you want that is a vector program.

There are lots of ways to do it.

EDIT: Also, if you do an image search and are looking for black and white images or line art, try [whatever you are searching for] and “tattoo” or “line art” and you will get more hits. You will get a lot of pics of tatoos, but there is a lot of the tattoo artwork as well you could use for inspiration.

Truth!

I have found recently that you can purchase a ridiculous amount files for such low cost each though. Etsy has lots. I admit I love creating most everything myself, but there is something so very satisfying to find .svg files, load them in your project, and be done! I’m afraid I find myself easily spending money on these “collections” of files.

For example, I searched for 30 seconds in Etsy with the simple search word that @WillAdams gave, fleuron, and came up with this that has 300 images for less than $4. Not exactly what you are looking for but close.

If you know a longarm Quilter or Embroidery person, they have a whole world of them.

Note that there are also specialty fonts which include such decorations such as Zapf Dingbats and the various iterations of Wingdings, or Adobe’s Wood Type Ornaments.

Thanks everyone for the helpful answers. Much appreciated.

Will’s magic word “fleuron” helped a lot. I found this sample on craftmanspace.com and here is an example cut.

And here’s an example of the cut (CC Vcarve, 90deg V):

So, I’m well on my way to creating exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks!
